So where have I gone?? What did I do? Well over the last 2-3 months I've sorta been hibernating. Many of you know that Jill and I will be moving to Dallas come this summer. This means that Beth*Lee is out. It was fun while it lasted, and while I'll miss shooting with my sister, and the bonding and fun that we had, I won't miss the logistics of who edits what, and how we're gonna do this and that. It'll be nice to have my own thing going. (That is if the Lord so inclines...)
All that to say, I've been shopping. I bought a URL http://www.davidleephotog.com, and plan to have something up pretty soon. I also have a new blog that I'm working on http://blog.davidleephotog.com. I've spent countless hours looking at amazing blogs that people are doing. From Sarah Rhodes incredible horizontal blog, to simplest free blogger template that people are using. I've looked into using the ever famous ProPhoto2Blog from NetRivet that plugs into Wordpress. I like what they have to offer, and it seems to becoming a standard for a lot of photographers. Although I like it, I just can't seem to justify spending the $200 right now, right before we move to have a blog. Something that Blogger gives you for free, and no, I don't have amazing splash headers, and auto-collapsing comments, but honestly is that what's selling people on photographers? How much money they drop on a web template, or how fancy their blog is..? I'm opting to get rid of this horrible thing I do, compare...I've spent the last few months trying to find a cheap way of having something similar to these blogs, and then talking to a friend today it king of just hit me...? Where's my priority here?? Why am I wasting hours and days, trying to make something I think people might like better?? Why don't I just focus on what this whole stupid blog thing should be about, posting great photos to inspire others. (I'm not saying my work does that, but other do to me) So I'm just gonna spend a few hours throwing together a simple slideshow, and a contact page, on a simple HTML website. As for my blog?? Why not just use something that's free?? I know wordpress is free, and eventually I'd like to migrate, but rather than blow hours and hours learning php to re-skin it. I'm just gonna stick with what I know for now. Maybe one day when I'm doing this thing full-time I'll be able to justify spending the money to have the bells and whistles on my site/blog. As for now, I'm just simple guy, who loves taking photos. I'm not a professional yet, but I'm getting there. My road is just a little bit slower than everyone around me, and rather than let that frustrate me, I'm just gonna let it happen as it does, if it does. I'm tired of trying to force things, I'm tired of carring the weight of what could be, and be dupped with a lie, that if 'I' only did a little bit more...has it ever really been me?? No!! So why am I still trying. This is me offically saying I'm done holding this. I let it go, I'll let this thing that's inside me go. It's never been 'mine', and so I release it.
Man I already feel better about this... I know many of you are probably thinking...man David never writes on his blog...well this is a new leaf. I want to be more transparent with everyone. So no pictures on this post, just some words and a new URL for those of you who want to keep on following me.

So on our trip home, we took the long way down the 101 from San Fran. Yeah longer, but much prettier, much more relaxing of a drive than taking the 5. We saw a amazing clouds against the mountains, we saw an amazing double rainbow. It was awesome!!

Then after a long day of shooting we relaxed and watched Benjamin Button, then we headed into the city for some epic German food!!

I can honestly say this trip taught me so much!! I learned so much about myself even in photography. It's sooo healthy to spend time with people who you admire and challenge you. Ashley was that and more for photography. I feel like now that I'm home and editing this last batch I found myself in photography. I found my look and feel...Something I've really been struggling with lately. It was just an amazing trip. I can't wait to spend time with you guys again!!

After our dog walk we headed back into the mac lab...

We then made dinner and headed off to the city for the fireworks in the harbor. Some of the most loudest and amazing fireworks I've ever seen. The booms would echo of the tall buildings off the water with loud pops and cracks, and it actually seemed to intensify them. I love when you can feel the explosions in your chest.

Any way great time, great trip, and we're headed off in thirty for round 2 of photog adventures...Check on back for updates!!

So we made it safe and sound. We woke up this morning, and Mrs. Ashley made us a killer breakfast!! We then got dressed and went out for a mid-morning engagement shoot. It was epic in more ways than one for realz!!
We then decided to head back to the house and take the dogs for a walk to wear them out. We were gonna be headed into the city later that evening so we thought some doggy exercise would help out!! You can check out Ashley's rad shots from the trip here

I wasn't gonna post these, but a buddy of mine commented on how much she liked them, lighting wise, so I thought I'd share. I was waiting for my girl to get off of work the other night and was horsing around with my flash, these are the results.
Despite my last post about how amazing it would be if we all weren't so selfish around the holidays (and yes buying people gifts they don't need to me is just as selfish as wanting a lot of gifts. Face it your trying to fill a personal need by buying overly priced gifts.) I find myself fighting this very desire...I really, really, really, would love to be selfish this year for CHRISTmas, cause I'd love a set of pocket wizards for some insane lighting flexibility. Why do they have to cost so much?? I truly feel blessed living in this country, but it's time like these when I feel the camel through the eye of a needle parable by living here. Does this mean I'd rather live in a poorer nation, nope, like I said I'm grateful, just like everyone else, walking the proverbial tight rope that is life in a consumeristic nation during the holiday squeeze. I've changed my mind, Santa if your listening, this year I want a nice helping of Jesus...best part about that gift?? I don't have to wait for CHRISTmas morning, to unwrap him. He's already here, ready to fill me up with CHRISTmas love!!

Egg nog or hot chocolate?
Hot Chocolate all the way!! Some people really go all out with marshmellows and all, but I like it with whip cream, and one better Peppermint Whip Cream... Amazing!!

Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
I'd have to think that the elves would...That is if they existed...

Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I like white lights for the tree inside and I like it when the bushes/trees have colored lights, but I like it when they're in blocks of color such as the trunks of the tree being a solid color, and the foliage being another color and not mixed in the strand.(If that makes any sense??) More lights the better they look, and blinkers of any kind are obnoxious!!

Do you hang mistletoe?
I usually don't be now that I'm dating the hotest girl ever, I can't wait to hang mistletoe this year!!

When do you put your decorations up?
Well I've never really put up decorations. I use to help my dad put up Christmas lights, but I never decorated places I lived cause I couldn't afford the decorations.

Favorite holiday memory as a child?
I went to the store with my mom and sister, and when we were walking out my mom opened the trunk and it the trunk sat a scooter, one I had been wanting for a long time. She quickly shut the trunk and I was like whose that for? Is that for me for Christmas. She played it off, that it wasn't a big deal that it was for one of my cousins, and not for me, but I knew...Come Christmas morning my new scooter sat beside the tree... (This was before the razor)

When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
Well there isn't a specific event where I felt like Santa was ruined for me. Growing up in a Christian house hold I'm sure we believed in Santa at some point, but his importance wasn't nearly significant as Jesus Christ's so it wasn't a big deal. My Grandpa always dressed up as Santa and came to our house to give us candy canes, and to ask us what we wanted. So Santa was always just Grandpa to us, and still is in a way, I've never met anyone who was as good of a Santa as my Grandpa.

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
As many white lights as I can fit, lots of the ball/globe things, maybe some ornaments, topped with a star. I'm a guy so my focus is always on the lights, and never on the decorations.

Snow! Love it or dread it?
Christmas isn't Christmas without snow in my opinion. I know people who live with snow hate it. I lived in the snow and as hard as it made life, I sure enjoyed slowing down and enjoying it beauty. There's just something about standing in a forest while its snowing. It's just so quiet...
One of my most favorite experiences in the snow was when I lived in Seattle. I worked at J.Crew in downtown Seattle, and had come in for the morning shift, and got off work around 2 oclock, and it had started snowing. It was a typical holiday afternoon, tons of people on the sidewalks, and lots of cars on the street, and I opened the front door to J. Crew to begin my walk home, and expecting the load roar of traffic and the hustle of people to hit my ears, instead it was dead quiet. People where walking but you couldn't hear it, cars where crowded in the street but they were silent. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. I stood there for a second trying to listen to see if I could hear, everything was muted. I walked home in utter silence, in one of the biggest cities in this country. In thinking about it now, I realize the snow blanketed the ground removing/padding people walking, and cars on the street, but just in the moment it was amazing!!

Do you remember your favorite gift?
No cause honestly I don't think I ever really focus on gifts, I remember the times with people. I know that sounds cheesy, but as an adult it's never been about the gifts. I mean I get stuff every year that I like, but nothing beats the experience of seeing the family that I love.

What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?
The most important thing to me, is obviously what Christmas is celebrated for. No not Santa, not presents, but for God himself coming to earth, to redeem his children from their wickedness. Our gifts truly do turn to dust in comparison.

What is your favorite holiday dessert?
Peanut Butter Balls
This one's easy...My mom use to make these for her goody bags she'd trade with her friends. She'd make them weeks in advance and put them in the freezer. I would always find where she was hiding them and easily demolish them. She'd hide them under food in the deep freeze and I'd go hunting to find them, like a bear in a trash can I'd be half bent over trying to find the peanut butter balls. It finally got the the point where she'd make 2 batches, one for the goody bags and one as a decoy so I wouldn't eat her goody bag treats. Now as an adult, I love making them, they usually only last a couple days though...Reeses peanut butter cups ain't got jack on these bad boys!!

What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Well due to my life over the last few years I don't really have any. Things we do change from year to year, but we always go over to my parents on Christmas morning to open presents and eat breakfast. That's probably the closest thing I have to a tradition.

Giving...always!! (and not because it's P.C.)

The sunset was crazy cool tonight over the valley. Guess the positive of living in a valley as apposed to living in the hills is that you can see forever (when the dirt bag fithy smog isn't blocking your view of the sky) making great scenic shots...if you're into that sorta thing...

New look, same taste!!
I change my header more than I do put pictures on this stupid thing...I finally feel like I've found one that really fits. I lost the dark colors, and I'm stinking with a clean simple white look...
I promise that'll I'll have pictures to post here very soon!! Life's just been super crazy, and the more I try get things off my plate the more things get added to it, so pictures will be here, they just aren't really my focus right now. Once I get everything situated pictures will start to be more of a regular thing!!

So I wear Sanuks everyday...I'm not exaggerating, I have more than one pair and since I've found them I've wore nothin' but.
Today I felt like wearing something different so I wore the only other pair of shoes I have, they're Merrell Aquasports, meant for trail running. They're super comfy as all good shoes should be, I'm just feeling really weird wearing something so bright and colorful on my feet.

I've been neglectful of my blog for what seems like forever, and I have a good reason, as my Mom put it, I found a life...
We're "officially" dating, and this was our first date ever as a couple and more than friends.
It feels so good to be surrounded by friends and family who encourage and love us both deeply and want to see us both grow closer to the Lord, and in turn grow closer together.

K so props need to be given to the rightful owners. The other night I kind of gave Jillian a little photo tutorial of how it all works with night photography, and photography in general. At least my "self-taught" ghetto understanding of photography. She came back to me the following evening or so with the idea to use glow sticks for lighting at night. BRILLIANT idea!! after many, many trials, and failed attempts we found something that just looked really cool!! More to come with this. This isn't the end of the glosticks...They're not just for Ravers anymore!!

You know, a lot has happened in the last year in reflection. People have come and gone in my life, one of those who came was my favoritest Nephew in the whole wide world, and even though I wasn't really shooting back then I still "tried". So these pictures are a year old. It's crazy to see how far you can grow in one year, and in all areas of life, not just photography, but spiritually, emotionally, you name it, even the man I thought I was a year ago has faded. I'm so much more of a man that he ever was in so many different ways, and yes this post has a lot to say about me, it's meant to show you my Nephew.

Wow, it's been a really long time since I've posted anything. I've been super busy, and hopefully soon you'll see why. I did take time to go to a birthday party with some new friends Larry and Jillian. It was on a ranch and we got to shoot guns, it was awesome!!

This was the first time Jillian shot a gun...

Peter was concentrating really hard!!

I think closing your eyes helps with the whole aiming thing...?

Night photography has been getting really fun!!
The last 2 photos where done with my tripod.
The first one (with Larry and Jillian). This was achieved by holding the shutter open for 30secs. Larry was kneeing down and Peter shot Larry like 3-4 times with the flash. Then Jillian jumped in and Peter shot her 2-3 times with the flash and then she jumped back out of the frame and that was the shot. Before and after Jillian left the frame allowed the lights behind her to shine through giving the ghostly appearance.
My shot was achieved by the same process. Shutter at 30sec. I held the flash above my head and fired it off a bunch of times and then I put my flash down and went back like 10 steps and used a flashlight to make a happy face.
Hope this helps. Go out and try some stuff for your self!! It's sooo much fun, and really helps understand light a little more...

Playing on freeway with cars at night...

Well I meant with every fiber in my body to post on Exposaroonie this week, I was gonna take a cool picture in Vegas of a cool silhouette, but with the heat and alcohol I just wasn't up for shooting and just up for relaxing and enjoying my time there. On my way home last night the moon was calling my name, and with the windmills it just screamed sheer coolness, unfortunately I don't have a tripod yet so they are a bit blurry, but this would be my submission if I had made it home prior to the posting deadline...Enjoy, maybe next week I'll make it, I'll be in the bay area, we'll see what I can work up...

So most out of character I half invited myself to the Brookeshouse warming party. Boy am I glad I did, I met some of the coolest most down-to-earth photogs out there!! Not only that but they inspire me so much!! It's great when the people that inspire you and challenge you are humbled by it. This is totally everyone at this party!! On my way I stopped and picked up my new gal pals Anna Joy and Gracie, and we hit the road. It was a great time and I had a "Brooken Blast"!!!! Thanks again guys for letting me swing by!! So I was blessed with the opportunity to hang out with and shoot this amazing couple!! Not only are they a beautiful couple, but they are super talented, and really down to earth!! I'm just excited that I can call them friends!! I can't wait to hear their album...they gave me a taste and it was really good!!

So a couple weeks ago I had this idea...Since AnnaJoy is so PUNK Rock she needed something a little extra special for her ShootSac. So I started thinking, and came up with an idea and thought out how it could look visually. I then took the idea to my sis, and she was super excited to give it a try. So I drove all over trying to find material (cause bakersfield sucks if your the least bit creative). We got together the other night and tried to tackle the logistics of how it was going to go together. Well not only did we pull it of, but it's sooo much better than I thought I would be. Not to toot horns or anything, but my sis rocked the sewing machine!! So my sis and I traveled down to Venturaland to hang out with Miss AnnaJoy and her best friend Gracie, and deliver our surprise. Needless to say I think she liked it...

Havasu Rhino Ride/Boat Trip...

So after Vegas and the Hover "Dammmm", Marc and I headed to Lake Havasu, and met up with Dia on Friday evening. We then headed for Bullhead to some friends house and went for an offroad ride to Oatman. When then headed back to the house, loaded up on the boats and headed to the river...A super long day, and I was super tired after...

Well I hope this shot was worth it, cause I lost the lens cap to my fisheye while taking it. The wind caught it and it blew away, never to been found!! Of course it was my fisheye, cause those things are like the holy grain...Impossible to find...
All and all it was an epic trip...A blast had by!!!

After our mis-meet at Hart Park this weekend we were able to connect after work Monday night and shoot Rylynn's Easter pictures!! I usually opt for black and whites, but these just really struck me better with the rich blue of the sky!! I'm constantly amazed, the whole shoot I was like these aren't gonna turn out at all. At her age she was more fascinated with the dirt and alfalfa than taking pictures, but to my surprise they did turn out... She was a mover and it was really hard to get her too look at the camera, but when she did, what a doll!! I had a blast and I love the challenge kids present!! Thanks for your patience Alyssa!!

What an honor it was to shoot one of my photogin' heroes!! Fynn Sophia Mae had the cutest little birthday at Valley Feed on Hageman and Allen. It was great to go on the pony ride, tracker train, and pet the goats. It was great to see the fam, and take pictures!! It was an absolutely beautiful day!!

Josiah and Bekka are with out a doubt my favorite couple!! They are just so down to earth and fun to be around.
